Metal Buildings
FAQ’s
The best way to get an accurate estimate is to call one of our friendly and knowledgeable building specialists. They’ll take the time to listen to how you want to use your building, and will then factor in the building dimensions, customization options, and installation location to give you the most precise estimate. It’s also a good idea to measure the width, length, and height of all the vehicles, items, and equipment you plan to shelter so you can better choose a building size that’s the right fit for you.
American Metal Structures is proud to maintain some of the shortest installation lead times in the industry. Your individual lead time may vary based on the size of your building, installation location, and season. You should receive a courtesy call from our office within 2 business days of placing your order, and then we’ll contact you again once your building is ready to schedule an installation time that best fits your schedule. If you have any questions, you can always give us a call at (336) 648-7244.

It’s certainly possible, but that really depends on what local regulations apply where you live. It’s best to call your local planning and zoning department and ask them what the rules are in your area. In general, our experience has been that you need to have a few feet of buffer from property lines.
Many areas do require building permits to install metal carports or buildings. It’s best to check with your local city and/or county to learn about regulations and standards where you live. If you need help, just reach out to us and we’ll be glad to help walk you through the process. And if a permit is required, you need to have that in hand before our installers arrive with your building.
Again, that depends upon the regulations that apply in your area. Site plans are a requirement for certified buildings. Whether a site plan is required for your particular building or not, it’s still a good idea to draw one up when you’re planning and deciding where you want your steel structure to go on your property. We have several generic site plans that we’re happy to provide as a template to help get you started. Just let us know if you have questions!
Snow load is how much snow accumulation a metal structure will hold per square foot; wind load refers to the strength of wind gust that a metal structure can endure. All of our buildings at American Metal Structures are designed to withstand snow and wind, but we can also certify a building to meet specific snow load or wind load requirements. Not sure what your requirements are? We can help you through that process of figuring that out, too.
Our installers can adjust the legs up or down 2”-3” on the bottom rail of the steel structure. If your area is more out-of-level than that, just give us a call and we can help you think through the best options for how to level your site. In order to avoid additional fees, it’s important that your site be level when we first arrive on the day of installation.
As a rule, our roofs follow the metal building industry standard of a 3/12 pitch (also known as a 3 pitch or 3-in-12 pitch). What this means is that the roof rises 3 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run, resulting in a roof pitch of 14 degrees.
At American Metal Structures, we’re so confident in the quality of our buildings that we back each one with a 20-year frame warranty, a 10-year metal roofing/paneling warranty, and a 1-year workmanship warranty.
The lower the gauge number, the thicker and stronger the steel is. 14-gauge steel buildings are the most popular for “light gauge” steel buildings, and can be designed to meet many wind and snow loads with added reinforcements. A 12-gauge frame is designed for heavier-duty use, is more durable, and allows for even greater wind and snow loads. 12-gauge framing is the preferred choice for commercial and industrial applications, and many residential customers also prefer 12-gauge for the greater peace of mind it provides.
Steel buildings are already stronger and more durable than stick-builds or buildings made from other materials by default. A certified metal building is one which also meets or exceeds local building codes and requirements for specific minimum wind and/or snow loads.
That really depends on how you plan to use your building, as well as on the building codes and regulations that apply where you live. Even if a certified building isn’t a regulatory requirement in your area, it’s still a good idea to upgrade to a certified building to ensure that your building can better handle anything that Mother Nature decides to throw your way.
The vertical roof is our premier roof option. It’s built on the stronger A-frame, and it also comes with additional reinforcements that make it the sturdiest choice. Vertical roof sheeting also channels rain, snow, and debris off the roof more easily. The vertical roof is best if you experience more extreme weather, and is highly recommended for any building that is 36’ in length or greater.

Here is a checklist of things you should do before our installer arrives to put up your building:
- Be sure to obtain any necessary building permits that may be required in your area
- Make sure your site is level – sites must not be more than 3” off level to avoid any cut leg fees or other additional labor or return trip fees. American Metal Structures does not provide any groundwork or site preparation services, so you’ll want to make sure this is taken care of before we arrive with your building. If you have other questions related to site leveling, just give us a call ahead of time and we can help walk you through the process.
- Mark any utility lines running on or around your planned site so they are visible for the installation crew. If you’re not sure of the exact location of water, gas, or electric lines, call 811 to have them come out and mark these lines free of charge.
- Clear all obstacles and debris from around the installation site to avoid a build over fee. Installation crews need a minimum of 36” of clearance on all sides of the building to be able to fasten any wall paneling, end wall framing, and trim.
- We can install on almost any level surface, including ground, gravel, asphalt, and concrete. If you plan to pour an asphalt or concrete slab for your new building, be sure to reach out and let us know that ahead of time. It’s also important to give your slab proper time to cure; we recommend allowing your slab to set for at least 72 hours before the building install date.
- If you’re going to pour a pad, it should measure the exact width of your structure and be 1’ shorter than the length of your building’s roof. If you’re installing in Florida, they require a concrete pad to be ¾” wider and the length to be the same as that of the building you’re installing.
- Have your balance payment ready before the arrival of the installation crew. A small unit such as an 18’×21’ carport will only take the installation crew about an hour to complete. Remember the installation crew could have more appointments after yours scheduled for the same day.
- Any additional safety requirements must be disclosed to American Metal Structures upon the purchase of your unit. American Metal Structures must be aware of any safety training or safety classes/videos our installers must complete prior to installation. Such requirements must be noted on the purchase order upon submission.
You sure can. If you’re a DIYer who likes to do things yourself, you can receive a discount on your building purchase if you decide to install the metal building kit on your own. Just reach out to us to learn more details about metal building kits..
Yes, and yes! Free delivery and installation is normally included on every standard purchase, but if you’re a DIYer we can provide a custom-fabricated metal building kit that you install yourself for a discount.
Absolutely, but there will be a return trip / delivery fee for that service. Better to choose all your desired customizations when you place your initial order and save yourself the cost of a return trip!
When installing a garage door centered on an end wall, the building and the door’s height can usually be the same. If you would like to install two garage doors on the same end, the wall height has to be 1’ taller than the doors (this will vary depending on the width of the building and whether the door is commercial or noncommercial.) When installing a garage door on the side wall, the wall height must be 1’ taller for noncommercial doors and 2’ taller for commercial doors.
If you’re going to pour a pad, it should measure the exact width of your structure and be 1’ shorter than the length of your building’s roof. If you’re installing in Florida, they require a concrete pad to be ¾” wider and the length to be the same as that of the building you’re installing. If you have other questions about installation pad size, just reach out to us and we’ll be glad to help!
Anchors are an important feature that keeps your custom metal structure from moving with rough weather or other hazards. Each installation surface type has a special anchor that helps to keep the building fastened tightly to the ground.
Asphalt anchors – Asphalt anchors are barbed to keep them secure to the material.
Concrete anchors – Expand once driven into the ground to provide for a more secure anchor.
Mobile home anchors – These anchors have an auger at the end, and are best for attaching structures to soil.
Rebar anchors – Used standard with most surface types except concrete; a reliable anchor option for securing most structures
Most metal buildings require 4 feet to 5 feet between frame legs. The actual distance needed is determined by standard engineering specifications. If you are installing multiple garage doors, there must be at least 2′ between each door and the corner. For example, if you want two 8’x8′ garage doors on the front of your building, you will need to order a building that’s at least 22′ wide to accommodate the doors.
